Child Insurance

There is a good public health service in Norway that gives children a high priority and prompt treatment if they become ill. And so it should be. Child insurance is therefore not health insurance for children.

Child insurance can be of great importance in the event of a serious illness or accident. A child insurance policy ensures the child can have an independent life as an adult, even if he or she should be affected by a serious illness or injury as a young person. In the short term, child insurance provides the family with opportunities for a greater degree of facilitation and support to adapt to the new challenges in a difficult situation.

In Norway, we have good public support schemes for children. Child insurance is neither an alternative to this public assistance nor health insurance for children. A child insurance policy will give families the extra they need to make everyday life go around in difficult periods if they become ill or injured. However, the most important thing is that child insurance gives children the help they need to live good lives as adults if they get a permanent illness or injury.

You can buy child insurance from the time the child is born until the age of 18. From 0 - 3 months, free infant insurance applies. When the child is 3 months old, and the health declaration has been approved, the child insurance starts. If you have maternity insurance, it includes infant insurance for the baby until the baby is 6 months old.

Generally, the child retains the insurance until the end of the year the child turns 26 years old. Then the insurance can be converted automatically to insurance for adults without the need for a new health assessment.
